Course Description:

'' Project Management has become a well-established area of professional practice, which has been evolving and growing in importance as the modern construction industry increases in complexity. In order to best achieve the end needs of the client, major construction projects require a sophisticated process, which seeks to maximise the interaction of functional, design and technological issues. The project manager’s role can be said to be central to the evolution of a project strategy, a clear set of objectives, as well as the adoption of an appropriate development team and construction programme. It involves an array of management and technical skills with particular emphasis on the important aspect of human resource management. As single point of responsibility for the client, it has a very different function from either design or construction management and requires distinct qualities not necessarily inherent in more traditional disciplines.

Course Content
This course is therefore aimed at construction professionals who have been schooled and are experienced in the more traditional roles of the construction professions but who recognise they need to develop their skill sets to more closely match the needs of newer working practices developing within the industry which are reflected in recent industrial reports. The course core investigates the strategic aspects of project management and the relationships with the other participants in the development process. The management of risk is an important dimension of the course as are financial and asset management. The course is designed to place a strong emphasis on the commercial workplace and its business environment. Students can develop their own specific interests in the option module and extend their studies in specific related areas through research under the guidance of tutors. The topics selected frequently complement individuals?interests and work experiences.

Entry Requirements
The aim of the course is career and professional development and in consequence students may be drawn from a broad background which demonstrates appropriate professional experience of the construction industry. It is expected that students will normally possess a degree or membership of a recognised professional body and who have completed two years of relevant professional experience.

Alternatively, applicants may be accepted who can demonstrate work experience and responsibility at a level at least equal to a graduate two years after graduation. An application made on these grounds would normally need to show at least eight years relevant work experience in an appropriate management role with commensurate responsibility. This would preferably include budgetary responsibility within their current job specification.
