Training Course:

Strategic Leadership

School/Trainer:

University of Westminster
London, United Kingdom

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' This innovative course from the Harrow Business School, is designed to meet the specific needs of professionals, consultants, managers and others working as, or seeking to develop the skills of leaders in organisation. It has evolved from our work as consultants in the delivery and accreditation of work-based corporate programmes. It reflects the issues facing organisations in a rapidly changing business environment.

The course aims to explore the concept of leadership and the values, rationale and mechanics of what is termed strategic development. The course also explores the impact of strategic leadership on individuals, organisations and society and the interaction between the individual and their wider environment. This is done through a self-managed learning approach in action learning sets and supported by strategic learning contracts.

The most significant conclusions of decades of leadership research from a leadership development perspective are that there are no clear generic definitions of what makes for leadership effectiveness and that it is the context of development that is of particular importance. Given that those who are most knowledgeable about their contexts for development are going be the learners themselves, the design of the MSc in Strategic Leadership reflects this. Further, one might expect that any development programme will support the underlying principle that the learning process itself should embody the intended outcomes. If, as in this case, it is strategic leadership abilities that are to be developed, then the learning process should require the demonstration of strategic leadership from participants. Clearly, they would not be served by a programme that presumed to tell them what they need to learn and how they need to learn it.

Assessment
There are no exams on this course. We believe that assessment is part of reflective learning. Students are expected to participate in assessing their own coursework and that of their peers
The course is a two year block mode programme designed to meet the needs of busy professionals and consultants. Each learning block runs from Wednesday to Saturday, ensuring that you are away from work for a minimum number of days. There are seven learning blocks over the two years. Learning sets are normally one day in duration with members meeting every six weeks or so.
Reflective practice and research methods modules run throughout the two years, underpinning the programme. Learning blocks are themed and cover areas such as the politics of development, leading change, theoretical frameworks for learning and development, and organisational learning.
The Action Research Project and the final Dissertation allow you to explore in depth an area of special interest.

Entry Requirements
Applicants must normally be aged at least 25 years and have a minimum of three years relevant experience in management, leadership, training and development or professional consultancy.
Applicants must normally hold a good Honours degree or equivalent. However, we place emphasis on experience and motivation in our selection criteria.
