Course Description:
'' This course has been running successfully for many years and is offered by the Transport Studies Group within the area of the Built Environment.
If you are awarded the MSc you will be allowed full exemption from the examination requirements for Membership of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport. The aim of the course is to develop your ability to initiate and carry out advanced analysis and research in the fields of transport planning and transport management. This will be done partly through formal lecturing but more especially through group workshops and research for the dissertation.
Teaching and research work are closely linked with externally funded research undertaken by the Transport Studies Group
Course Content The course is orientated towards problem solving. In other words, you will be taught the techniques and methodologies which you will need in order to take decisions or provide the necessary information for others to take decisions. The course is a balance of theoretical and practical applications.
There are three separate components:
Core modules
There are four of these which are compulsory:
- Economics and Finance for Transport - Statistics and Survey Methods for Transport - Comparative Transport Policy - Research Dissertation
All core modules except the Research Dissertation are assessed by a combination of coursework and examination and are offered in the first semester. Part-time students would attend Economics and Finance for Transport and Comparative Transport Policy in the first year.
Specialist options
These are courses studied in-depth in order to allow you to develop a specialist expertise in one or more particular fields of transport. You select three of the specialist modules and you will be assessed in all three during the second semester. Part-time students select two specialist option modules in the first year and one in the second year.
Specialist option modules currently offered are as follows, though not all modules may be given each year:
- Land Use and Transport - Public Passenger Transport - Traffic in Urban Areas - Freight Transport and Logistic Services - Airline Planning and Management - Airport Planning and Management
Entry Requirements You should normally have a good Second Class Honours degree in a relevant subject. Alternatively, where your first degree may be of a lower class or in another field or, where you may have a non-degree qualification, you may be accepted on the course if you can show that you have sufficient and suitable professional experience in the transport field. ...''
