'' Kaw Area Technical School (KATS), in partnership with Fort Scott Community College, is pleased to announce a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) program for trucking on the KATS campus in Topeka. Training is provided through a combination of classroom lecture, discussion, hands-on experience, and a review of current laws dealing with the unique needs of the trucking industry. This is a 240-hour training program designed to prepare students to enter the trucking industry at completion. Emphasis in the class is on federal moter carrier regulations, driver’s daily log, mileage and defensive driving. Of the total class hours, students spend 151 hours in the driving segment of the training. This includes the driving range and backing range. The first class on the KATS campus began in November 2005. Additional programs will be scheduled every 90 days or as demand warrants.

Our Topeka-region trucking companies will be positively impacted with an available, trained workforce. Individuals from Northeast Kansas seeking a new career in the transportation industry will be able to obtain training locally. Additional beneficiaries are other area companies who depend upon the trucking industry to meet their delivery needs.

Fort Scott offers successful truck driving courses in various locations, but there remains an unmet need in the Topeka area. The need for this class is well established through business�requests and is evident by the many, many ads for drivers frequently in the Sunday Topeka Capital-Journal.

Under this partnership KATS provides the classroom space and an area for the trucks and equipment. Fort Scott Community College is providing the necessary equipment, staff, and instructional resources. The joint venture allows the two institutions to provide a six-week, turn-key CDL training program based in Topeka on a quarterly basis. Students will be charged a licensing fee of $22.00 by the State of Kansas at the completion of the program.
