'' The mission of public health is to provide leadership in helping to protect communities from threats to health, mobilize efforts to promote community and individual health, and foresee and prevent disease and injury.

Agencies with responsibility for public health can only carry out their missions if they have adequate capacity to fulfill the core functions of public health. Many studies have documented a critical need to better prepare the U.S. workforce to address core public health services.

The University of New England offers two fully articulated graduate programs. Working adults and post-baccalaureate students can now earn a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Public Health and a Master of Public Health degree (MPH) full or part time with most of the courses offered in a distance learning online format.

Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study
in Public Health
This 18-credit hour program provides students with the core public health concepts they need to either enhance their professional knowledge or to pursue a graduate degree in the field. These 18 credit hours are the foundation courses for UNE’s Master of Public Health degree.

Master of Public Health
The 45-credit hour MPH curriculum is designed to enhance students’ skills in a variety of professional areas including analysis, communication, program development and planning, financial management, policy, ethics and law. All program courses from the Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study in Public Health certificate are transferable to UNE’s MPH degree program and count toward the 45 credit hours. More information.


These two programs, offered through UNE’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, are designed to be flexible and practical. The vast majority of courses for the two programs are offered online in an integrated video and Powerpoint format. The MPH curriculum also includes a workplace-based practicum and a summer intensive workshop.

Faculty members are highly knowledgeable health-care professionals with real-world experience in their fields.

These very convenient, flexible programs, which are focused on practice and management, provide students with the basic knowledge, skills and values to gain employment or get promoted in the burgeoning field of public health.
