Course Description:

'' E.S.L. (English as a Second Language) is an advanced College-Level Program that has been specifically designed for students whose first language is not English and who need to develop their English proficiency to a level appropriate for college courses in an American college curriculum.
Students wishing to enroll in the E.S.L. program should have completed at least two years of E.S.L. classes at either high school or an adult education center or its equivalent. E.S.L. program students MUST be able to speak, understand, read and write English. Incoming E.S.L. students take a 30 minute free of charge assessment test to determine their proficiency level in English, and then are given recommendations as to which E.S.L. (or English) courses to take.
The emphasis of the Program is on small class sizes, individual support and tutoring, and supplementary materials such as tapes, workbooks, computer programs and books. This support and tutoring continues throughout E.S.L. students’ program of study at Massasoit. Students should use these services as supplements to their classwork.
The Program consists of four courses of three credits each. These credits may be applied to Humanities, Liberal Arts or general electives for all programs at Massasoit Community College. In addition, a Transitional ESL college preparatory non-credit ESL course is offered throughout the academic year. Students must take the assessment test to qualify for this course.
Full-time E.S.L. students generally take two E.S.L. courses and two other courses in the first and second semesters. Upon completion of the E.S.L. courses, students are given recommendations as to the next English courses that they should select.
