Training Course:PhotographySchool/Trainer:College of Visual Arts St. Paul, Minnesota, United States
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' Everyday we swim in a sea of photographic imagery. Newspapers, magazines, TV, movies, the web, billboards, we can hardly make a move without looking at photographically produced images. Most of them we forget as soon as they leave our sight. How do we make a photograph that lingers in memory, that communicates something important, that speaks to our deeper humanity? What are the wide range of ways to produce a photographic image? Why would you choose one technique over another in the effort to make the most powerful statement you can?
At CVA we believe in beginning with time tested, hands on camera and darkroom work, in both black and white and color, to gain a deep understanding and appreciation of the individual image and how the careful creation and manipulation of that image allows the photographer to control the result rather than just taking what you get.
Our advanced classes build on this foundation teaching the use of medium and large format cameras, working in the studio on lighting strategies, understanding metering, film choices, and other professional techniques while also addressing the conceptual issues surrounding this medium and its role in contemporary society. This knowledge base is critical to whatever career direction the student happens to take.
An entire year will be spent delving into the techniques and issues of digital photography, including digital capture and film scanning, color management, advanced image editing with Adobe Photoshop, outputting to the web, use of our archival photo inkjet printers with beautiful 100% rag art papers, how to work with service bureaus, and how to best implement a digital work flow into your practice.
Each photo major will back track into photo history to rediscover the fascinating world of Alternative Photographic Processes, compounding sensitizers and hand coating beautiful art papers to create cyanotypes, gum bichromate, platinum/palladium, and other hands on processes that will round out an understanding of the old and new of photography.
Our photo students are taking advantage of internships with some of the finest local photographers including Alec Soth and Joann Verburg or working in photo related businesses to get an insiders look at these worlds.
The final stage for CVA photo majors is the capstone Photo Studio Thesis class where research and a deep investigation into issues of importance to the individual culminate in a refined body of work that signals a readiness to take the stage in the larger world of photography. ...''
