'' The EMT-Basic Training Program of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is a comprehensive, 132-hour, one-semester course that prepares the graduate for work in the field of emergency medical services and is prerequisite for entry to the EMT-Paramedic Training Program. This 132-hour course complies with all mandates from the Mississippi Department of Health, Division of Emergency Medical Services and the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians for the training of EMT-Basic providers. On completion the student must pass the National Registry examination in order to obtain a Mississippi license to function as a pre-hospital emergency care provider.
The program covers all aspects of basic emergency care, including CPR, airway and ventilation management, hemorrhage control and shock management, spinal immobilization, splinting, bandaging, management of medical emergencies, emergency childbirth and behavioral/emotional emergencies. Additionally, the course teaches the aspects of the prehospital environment essential for appropriate response to emergencies, including emergency driving techniques, legal requirements and concepts, medical terminology, patient moving and handling, risk reduction for infectious diseases, basic concepts of rescue, hazardous materials incident response and major incidents.
