'' Medical laboratory technicians (MLT) are an important part of the health care team, processing and testing patient samples to detect the presence of diseases.
Most MLTs find employment in hospital, referral or public health laboratories, but this field of study also prepares graduates for employment in research, government and municipal laboratories.
The employment outlook for this field is expected to be excellent, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The Jobs Rated Almanac ranks MLTs 18th in a listing of 250 jobs. MLTs ranked fourth in the health care/medicine category, based on factors such as salary, stress levels, work environment and job security.
Graduates are eligible to take national certification examinations offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) and the National Certification Agency for Clinical Laboratory Scientists (NCA).
