Respiratory Care Technology

School/Trainer:

Central Community College
Columbus, Grand Island, Hastings, Holdrege, Kearney, Lexington, Nebraska, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' Respiratory Care practitioners are trained technical professionals with challenging and rewarding responsibilities in today’s health care system. Working under the direction of physicians, they evaluate, treat, and care for patients with breathing disorders.

Most medical facilities need qualified respiratory care practitioners. Hospitals are the primary source for employment. In addition, nursing homes, clinics and home care programs are beginning to maintain respiratory care staff. Some opportunities for employment also are available in education, equipment sales and research laboratories.

This is one of the fastest growing occupations, according to the U.S. Labor Department, which projects a 35 percent increase in employment in a 10-year period, amounting to 30,000 new jobs.

In central Nebraska, students can complete an associate of applied science degree in respiratory care through a combination of:

Prerequisite courses offered by Central Community College.
Clinical practice in facilities in the CCC service area.
Online respiratory care courses offered by Southeast Community College in Lincoln. SCC awards the degree.
Students can complete 38 semester-hours of course work through Central Community College. A minimum grade of 75 percent (C) is required in each CCC course to transfer to SCC.

During their last semester of CCC courses, students must apply for admission to the SCC Web-based respiratory care program. The number of students admitted to the program each year is determined by the availability of clinical sites. Enrollment in individual online courses generally is limited to 25 students.
