Course Description:
'' The M.P.A. program is a late afternoon and evening program administered jointly by URI and Rhode Island College. The program’s courses are conveniently offered in the late afternoons and evenings in downtown Providence at URI’s Feinstein College of Continuing Education. The M.P.A. program is designed to accommodate part-time and full-time students, as well as those who are interested in taking courses for a better understanding of the public sector. Subject to applicable rules and regulations, courses may also be taken by state employees for incentive credits.
The program currently has 60 matriculating students. The small size of this program allows for students to have more one-on-one interaction with the professors of the department, as well as affording students the opportunity to direct their studies according to their personal interests. The MPA Director works with matriculating students to develop their official Plan of Study in line with the student’s professional goals.
The program offers traditional and the most current administrative theory and practice. The Core curriculum conforms to the National Association of Schools for Public Administration and Affairs (NASPAA) guidelines concentrating on a number of critical areas such as program and policy analysis, strategic decision making, public budgeting and personnel administration, administrative law and ethics. Students use their elective options to develop expertise in many areas of public policy such as grant writing and contracting, financial administration, philanthropy, labor relations, transportation, educational administration and environmental policy. Students interested in a professional career in nonprofit administration can obtain the Certificate in Nonprofit Studies offered at Rhode Island College as part of their MPA program of study.
