Course Description:
'' The coursework is intensive and exclusively focuses on developing craft, technique and the essential tools necessary to build a career in the performing arts. The fundamental mission of the program is to enable students to achieve a proficiency in acting and/or musical theatre that will serve as a foundation for a professional career and will enable them to function in the profession with poise, skill and maturity. The program offers training in acting, singing, and dance to prepare the student for a career in the professional theatre. The first year of training focuses upon the development of technique with special emphasis on individual work. The second year’s focus is upon utilization of the acquired techniques as the student develops performance and audition pieces.
The goals of the curriculum for the Integrated Program are to enable the student: a.) to experience a diversity of approaches towards the craft of acting; to acquire the physical, vocal, and imaginative resources needed to rehearse and sustain a role in school demonstration work and in public performance; b.) to enhance singing with a secure vocal technique; to analyze the lyrics and music of a song; to create an effective theatrical presentation using songs from the musical theatre repertoire; c.) to practice the primary dance styles including tap, jazz and ballet; to develop the physical skills necessary to dance selected standard routines from Broadway musicals; d.) to practice professional ethics in rehearsal and performance situations; e.) to create, perform and sustain a role in school demonstration work and in public performance; and f.) to prepare for and be able to present a professional audition with material that is appropriate; and to be equipped with practical tools and knowledge regarding the business aspects of the profession.
INSTRUCTIONAL MODE OR METHODS: AMDA’s approach is based on students�total emersion in intensive training in a professional environment. The approach is practical rather than academic. The performance-based curriculum is designed for students a.) to learn and master the varied approaches and techniques that are used in the profession, and b.) to develop fundamental skills and competencies to serve as a foundation for a sustained professional career.
