Course Description:

'' The MATESOL program offers concentrations in teaching, publishing and writing, program development and management, and curriculum development. It provides students with the practical, relevant training they will need to advance in careers in publishing, writing, managing, and developing ESOL programs or designing curriculum in the public or private sector. The goal of the program is to produce well-trained, culturally and politically aware professionals who are proficient in their specialties and knowledgeable about crucial issues in language teaching and learning in the evolving global environment.

Students may study part-time or full-time and may complete their degree entirely online. Teaching concentration students may combine online study with an on campus summer intensive program.

Teaching
The goal of this concentration is to give people the most practical, immediately useful training possible. The emphasis is on student-centered, content-based, communicative teaching and learning. People in all professions and from all walks of life want to learn English, so there are myriad teaching opportunities in language schools, private organizations and businesses, public schools, colleges, and universities all over the world. With this concentration students will be well prepared to teach ESL or EFL at all levels, and they will have the tools to reflect on their teaching and do what is necessary to continue to learn and improve.

Curriculum Development
This concentration prepares teachers of ESOL to move into careers in curriculum development in local, state, national, or international organizations and agencies, public and private. Now that English is being introduced in public education systems at every level all over the world, there is a need for ESOL curriculum developers almost everywhere. Not only are there opportunities to design and update curricula for instruction, but there is also the prospect of creating curricula and formats for market-specific materials.

This program was developed to accommodate not only students who have the flexibility and time to come to New York to study, but also professionals who may already be working and cannot leave home.

Publishing and Writing, Fall ’08
This concentration will open up a variety of opportunities in editing, writing, marketing, and sales. Publishing companies that specialize in ESOL materials are always looking for people with teaching experience, as well as a background in different areas of publishing. Students take courses that give them insights into the whole publishing process; that help them create innovative, marketable materials; and that give them a perspective on market needs.

Program Development and Management, Fall ’08
With this concentration, experienced teachers of ESOL can move into careers in administration, supervision, development, and management. As English becomes more and more important as the lingua franca of the world, language programs, businesses, schools, and universities all need experienced teachers who know how to create and run ESOL programs. This concentration prepares teachers for all aspects of program management and development, including training and supervising teachers. It also offers excellent training for people wishing to open their own school or business.
