'' Basic Wilderness First Aid and Standard First Aid courses follow similar guidelines in emergency care, the backcountry offers unique problem-solving emergencies that the common urban first aid course does not address. Studies show that many recreational wilderness accidents are preventable. Improper care of even the simplest of injuries in a wilderness setting can lead to a life or death situation.
Basic Wilderness First Aid gives you an excellent introduction to wilderness emergencies. The goal of this course is to provide basic knowledge of common life threatening emergencies geared towards wilderness travel, problem solving skills and prevention. Excellent review of the ABC’s of a Standard First Aid course but geared towards a wilderness setting. This course is recommended for the tripper who is not too far from getting help in. For example, teachers leading day hikes or canoeing provincial parks with help close by.
Content Heart Saver Level A Lay person CPR certification and Wilderness Guide Lines for CPR, treatment of trauma (spinal) and medical conditions, environmental hazards (hypothermia/hyperthermia), equipment improvisation, wound care, helmet removal, signs & symptoms of Anaphylaxis (allergies) and use of an Epi-pen are also included.
Class Format The course is 16 hours long with plenty of hands on and theatrical make up to add realism.
Course Materials Manual, DVD, and Heart & Stroke Heart Saver booklet/CD included.
Optional Field Day: $40 Rain or Shine 6 hours outside Rouge Valley Numerous Scenarios and practical review of fractures and improvised stretchers. Bring Lunch/Pack Nov. 11 -10 am to 4pm.
