Course Description:

'' The Master of Science in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) with a concentration in Exceptional Student Education is designed for students who wish to obtain a State of Florida teaching certification in the area of English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). The purpose of the program is to prepare culturally sensitive educators to respond to the unique language needs of children with limited English proficiency in grades K �12.

The program consists of 30 credits of coursework. CAU’s unique program design integrates into the field of language acquisition and education the overall understanding of student behavior and sensitivity towards culturally diverse populations. A highlight of the program is the completion of a Graduate Portfolio that will assess student knowledge within the context of TESOL education in the following areas: instructional strategies, language education methodologies, curriculum development, ESOL educational technology, remediation of communication disorders and assessment.

KEY ADVANTAGES / BENEFITS

1. Graduating students may qualify to the State of Florida’s Critical Teacher Shortage Student Loan Forgiveness Program (Maximum of $10K).
2. Graduating students may qualify to the State of Florida’s Critical Teacher Shortage Tuition Reimbursement Program for up to 9 credits.
3. Students currently employed by Miami Dade County Public Schools qualify for an institutional CAU scholarship equivalent to 20% of Tuition.
4. Graduating students may qualify for a School Board Salary Increase ($3K) upon conferment of the MS degree.
5. Graduating students may qualify for a one time bonus for entering a critical shortage area ($1K) from Miami Dade County Public School.
6. The MS TESOL Program may be completed within one year.
7. A Final Project, rather than a thesis or practicum, is required for graduation.
8. 30% of the credits can be applied towards the MS-Exceptional Student Education at CAU, another Critical Teacher Shortage area.
