Course Description:

'' A career in policing is primarily about working with people to ensure public safety through crime prevention and law enforcement. Police work requires the building of relationships in the community and sensitivity towards the needs of people from all races, cultures and backgrounds. For those people who are truly interested in serving the needs of the community, police work is very rewarding. Whether dealing with the security concerns of a store merchant, talking with a senior citizen, or befriending a group of local kids, the job challenges are complex and fulfilling.

The Police Foundations program is a joint initiative between the Police Learning System Advisory Committee and the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities to establish minimum entrance standards for police services in Ontario. The program prepares students for employment opportunities and career success at all levels of policing and related jurisdictions and justice professions. The triOS Police Foundations Program has significant benefits over programs offered at Community Colleges.

The triOS program:
... is 1 year in duration rather than 2 years so you can get into the workforce quicker;
... is 5 hours per day of instruction, enabling you to work part-time while you study;
... offers year-round starting points so you don’t have to wait until September or January to join a program.

Topics of this program include: Introduction to Policing; Canadian Government and Politics; Canadian Charter and Criminal Code; Professionalism and Ethics; Criminal Justice in Canada; Federal & Provincial Statues/Offences; Traffic Management; Crisis Intervention and Conflict Management; CPR & First Aid; Psychology; Sociology and Criminology; Private Security Patrol Procedures; Community Policing; Cultural Diversity; First Nations People; Communications & Interpersonal Skills; Police Powers and Authority; Criminal Investigations; Forensic and Evidence; Interviewing and Interrogation Skills; Courtroom Procedures and Testimony; Officer Safety and Protecting the Public; Fitness and Lifestyle Management; Microsoft Office Applications; Business Communications & Career Management.

Career opportunities that are available to graduates include Ontario Police Services (municipal and provincial) , Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Out-of-Province Police Services, Canadian Armed Forces, By-Law Enforcement, Private Police and Investigators, Campus Police, Security (special events, industrial & commercial, residential, retail, casino etc), and Correctional Services.
