This is a 9-week Certificate program. Upon completion of this program you will be able to work as a Ward Clerk in a hospital or nursing home setting.

ROLE OF THE WARD CLERK This is an extremely varied position. The ward clerk assumes many duties. All of these facets will be discussed to give the student the feel for this type of job. Everything from answering phones to transcribing Dr.’s orders to answering emergency codes will be addressed.
OTHER HEALTH CARE WORKERS The hierarchy of the health care team will be identified with emphasis being placed on who the ward clerk reports to.
CONFIDENTIALITY This topic is extremely important as the ward clerk has access to very personal and private details of a patient. The significance of confidentiality, what information is considered confidential, and situations that commonly arise where ward clerks must respect patient confidentiality will be discussed.
COMMUNICATION SKILLS The ward clerk is the giver and receiver of a lot of very important information. They must be excellent communicators to ensure that instructions are given and received properly. Communication styles, techniques and strategies will be reviewed to ensure that the ward clerk fulfils all aspects of their job effectively.
SAFETY The issue of safety in the workplace is a very important one. Information that will enable the ward clerk to remain injury free and work in a safe environment will be discussed. Laws that try to ensure our safety as well as the understanding of the infection cycle are just some of the many aspects of safety that will be addressed.
MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY A ward clerks job relies heavily on the ability of the ward clerk to interpret health care provider’s orders. To make sure that no errors are made, the ward clerk must be able to accurately decipher medical abbreviations and terms. This intensive section of the course uses word parts to quickly and accurately determine the meaning of new medical words.
MEDICAL FORMS A ward clerk will be expected to select appropriate forms to transfer information. Forms such as Kardex, admission, transfer, discharge, lab requisitions and patient’s charts will be reviewed as well as when and where to use them.
LABORATORY TEST/SPECIMEN REQUISTIONS As the ward clerk will be receiving results from the laboratory and ordering tests it is imperative that they know the names, abbreviations and significance of these tests. Tests will be grouped together to show the major organ or disease that they are used to diagnose. Certain lab tests also require specific patient preparations, and these situations will be discussed.
DIAGNOSTIC TESTS/RADIOLOGY Ward clerks will be sending patients to and receiving results from major diagnostic tests and X-ray procedures. The student will study the major procedures to understand patient preparation and the significance of each test.
SURGICAL PROCEDURES The student will study the terminology of and types of surgical procedures that patients are frequently sent for. They will also be informed of concerns about patient preparation.
PROCESSING ORDERS The majority of the work that a ward clerk does is process doctors, physio, dietary and nurses orders. The procedures forms and techniques are fully explored.
ADMISSION, TRANSFER and DISCHARGE OF PATIENTS A ward clerk is responsible for certain aspects of the admission, transfer and discharge process of a patient. Their responsibilities will be explained.
PHARMACY Pharmaceutical orders are a large part of processing orders. Understanding the terminology, the most common drugs used and procedures are explored.
Work Placement Ican College’s Placement Officer will meet with each student individually to discuss aspirations and personal interests, and a 4-week co-op work placement will be arranged at the end of the 5-week class/lecture/lab portion of the curriculum.
