'' Do you have a passion for food, to cook and be creative? A career as a leading-edge chef is at your fingertips. There is a great demand for skilled chefs at home and abroad. Humber’s program develops up-to-date skills in food preparation and presentation. Through classroom learning, hands-on work in the on-campus culinary labs and the opportunity to train in a real restaurant environment, students develop the skills needed to work in the culinary arts field and specializations including a-la-carte cuisine, pastry and desserts, ethnic cuisines and kitchen management and purchasing. Humber’s lab facilities include a dedicated baking and pastry lab and five dedicated kitchen labs, including the award-winning Compass Group Canada Culinary Demonstration Theatre and Kitchen Lab. This innovative, multi-purpose classroom/lab opened in January 2005.
A most exciting feature is the Vent Master ceiling - slick and modern, with the fans and ducts hidden behind a stainless steel ceiling where grease and bacteria can’t build up. The lab also features: gas-fired stoves, sensor responsive soap, water and paper towels for hand washing, a 49-seat theatre-style seating area, a cooking demonstration area, induction cooktop, and four large television screens. Two additional labs are being developed making Humber’s facilities the most modern in North America. This program also offers an exclusive exchange program with Motherwell College in Scotland for the fourth semester.
A fast-track program is implemented for the January start. The first semester (January - April) is immediately followed by the second semester (May - July), resulting in a shorter summer break. Third semester begins in September, allowing students to complete the two-year program in just 16 months.
