Course Description:
'' Humber has been training teachers for more than 20 years. Faculty members are highly respected, dedicated professionals - with, at minimum, a master’s degree and TESL certification - who have been teaching, publishing, and working in the ESL field. Humber’s innovative curriculum is based on the latest ESL teaching approaches, methods, and assessment systems, including the CLB (Canadian Language Benchmarks).
Participants are exposed to a wide range of theoretical issues and receive a variety of opportunities for ESL classroom observation and practice teaching. Unlike many other institutions, our practicum is fully arranged and supervised. Students fulfil their practicum requirements (80 hours) partly in Humber’s English Language Centre, in the English for Academic Purposes program, and partly in the school board’s adult ESL and LINC classes. Participants also work as tutors in Humber’s Writing Centre and Language Lab, where they practise CALL (Computer-Assisted Language Learning) methodology using the latest multimedia software.
Graduates have on-going access to Humber’s Career Service Centre and may place resumés on the Humber job site. An ESL career information day is held each year with employers from various ESL sectors. Graduates can interview for a teaching position in our summer language program, or for an eight-week internship in the English for Academic Purposes program. Humber’s certificate is widely recognized outside Ontario, in Canada and abroad.
Work Placement
Two, paid eight-week practicums each year afford selected graduates the opportunity to teach in Humber’s EAP program under the guidance of a mentor faculty member.
