Course Description:
'' This program provides a comprehensive treatment of the advanced principles and practices of software engineering with a balanced emphasis on theory and practice. The program involves both coursework and a thesis.
These studies are supported by program components in software architecture, software quality management,the Personal Software Process (PSP), process assessment and process improvement (CMM/SPICE), software engineering standards, advanced object-oriented design, verification and validation and other advanced topics in software engineering.
The program covers both the theoretical foundations of software engineering and their application to the specification, design, implementation, verification, re-engineering, maintenance and documentation of large-scale software systems.
Attendance
The Master of Software Engineering is offered full-time and part-time on campus at the Nathan campus. You may choose to study courses at other campuses if or where the program structure allows.
You will be classed as a part-time student if you are enrolled in less than 30 credit points per semester. International students must maintain a full-time study load.
Students enrolling in the Master of Software Engineering are required to complete coursework and a dissertation.
Coursework:
You are required to attend approximately 10 ? 15 hours of scheduled classes per week per course. Classes may be held during the day and evening.
Dissertation:
During your enrolment in the dissertation component of this program, it is expected that you will be able to work independently for most of the time. The requirement for on-campus attendance is relatively flexible and unstructured. However, you will be required to meet regularly with your supervisor and it is recommended that you discuss the on-campus attendance requirements with your supervisor at the start of the dissertation.
Summer Semester:
The Master of Software Engineering offers some courses in Summer semester. You may elect to take 1 course each Summer semester to fast track your progress.
Additionally, in some cases you may be able to work on your dissertation project during the Summer Semester depending on the availability and agreement of your supervisor.
Summer semester is the period between the end of Semester Two and the beginning of Semester One of the following year (November-February). Summer semester courses are delivered in intensive blocks (less than the normal 13-week semester), starting and concluding at varying times from November through February.
During Summer semester a student will generally attend 25 ? 40 hours of scheduled classes per course and/or meet regularly with your supervisor.
Career opportunities
Completion of the degree will allow application for professional membership in the Institution of Engineers, Australia and to similar professional bodies in other countries that are signatories of the Washington Protocol. Career opportunities include: software engineer, team leader and project manager.
