Course Description:
'' The General English for Academic Purposes (GEAP) program is suitable for students who are serious about wanting to develop their English language skills. The program develops effective and confident oral and written communication skills and is ideal for international students seeking the experience of studying English in the academic environment of an Australian university.
The program offers a range of levels of proficiency ranging from elementary to advanced. All levels focus on the development of speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary within an academically focussed environment. As your general English proficiency increases academic tasks are added to the course content.
Students do a test on the first day of the course to determine their current english level and placement in the most appropriate class. The test involves grammar, vocabulary, writing and speaking and is conducted by experienced teachers.
GEAP can be taken as a stand-alone program or as a pathway to further study at the University of Adelaide or another Australian institute of higher learning. An IELTS or TOEFL score is a prerequisite for University entrance. IELTS preparation is offered as an optional elective in the GEAP program.
About the Course The core program runs each day in the mornings. In these classes the focus is on the development of students speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. The teaching methodology is based on a communicative approach, with students doing pair work, group tasks and role-play activities. Within a supportive learning environment, students are encouraged to ask and respond to questions, and participate in discussions. As students use spoken and written English to gather, understand and convey information, their language skills are developed, as well as their confidence and ability to work in groups.
In addition to the core program, a language extension class is held one morning per week. In this class, the students focus on developing particular skills (e.g. listening and conversation, drama and play reading) or study a particular area of interest (e.g. Australian culture). The focus of the extension activities is based upon the students language needs and interests. The students improve their English skills through listening, discussion, collaborative group work and possibly visiting relevant external places of interest.
Students will have a mix of morning and afternoon classes. If not studying in class, students will do independent study, work in project teams or conduct individual research.
