Course Description:
'' This program aims to provide both a fundamental understanding of computing and a specialist knowledge of the theory and practice of software engineering. The program prepares graduates for professional careers in computing and the information services industry in general and specialist software development organisations in particular.
Entry requirements
Applicants are required to have one of the following qualifications:
Qualified for the SACE; and Recorded achievement in five SACE subjects taken at Stage 2 level; and Included at least four Stage 2 subjects which are approved Higher Education Selection Subjects (HESS); Completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma; Completed or partly completed a recognised higher education program at a recognised higher education institution; Completed a recognised diploma or associated diploma from TAFE or Certificate IV level course; Completed at least four Open Universities Australia (OUA) courses at the appropriate level; Qualified for Special Entry; or Completed University Foundation Studies program OR
Completed one of the following professional courses:
Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE) MCSE + Internet and Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (MCSD) Lotus Certified Professional (CLP) Novell Certified NetWare Engineer (CNE) Cisco Certified networking Associate (CCNA) Cisco Certified Networking Professional (CCNP) In addition, International students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained one of the following standards within the last two years prior to admission:
International English Language Testing System (IELTS): test - band 6; or TOEFL 550; or previous successful secondary or tertiary study where English was the language of instruction.
Content/structure
This four-year program is designed to educate students as computer professionals specialising in software engineering, that is, the skills required for the development of large-scale and complex software systems. The program consists of eight core information and communication technology courses ( 36 units), nine core software engineering courses (40.5 units), four elective courses in the third year ( 18 units), and for honours students, either three elective courses (13.5 units) or four advanced elective courses (18 units) in the fourth year, a final year industry-based project or thesis and for honours students, a research methods course.
The first year of this program is similar to the first year of the Bachelor of Computer and Information Science, and students may transfer between these two programs with the approval of the program director.
