'' Since all future technologies, 3G and beyond, will likely employ some form of CDMA, understanding CDMA is imperative for all wireless industry professionals. Imparting such understanding is the objective of this course. Taught are the general principles that underlie all CDMA systems, strengths and limitations of CDMA, and its implementation in the 3G systems now in development around the world.

Audience:

Those experienced with a non-CDMA technology who wish to work with any of the CDMA-based technologies. The standard presentation of this course assumes a bachelor of science in Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, or a related subject along with an appropriate background in communications.

Knowledge of the wireless network structure and operation, RF propagation and fading issues, and link budget analysis.
At least two years experience in the design and optimization of a wireless network using any major technology.

You will learn the concepts of direct sequence spread spectrum, the foundation of any CDMA system. Having mastered these key concepts, you will study how several well-known features of CDMA are implemented, including capacity and soft capacity, soft (and softer) handover, RAKE receiver, effects of traffic imbalance, cell breathing, pilot pollution, power control, multi-user detection, etc. Finally, we will undertake case studies that demonstrate these concepts in action in specific standards such as IS-95; 1xRTT and 1xEVDO (cdma2000 family); and UMTS (FDD, TDD, HSDPA), providing an overview of these technologies and their interrelationships in the process.
