'' Investing in derivatives can be risky business, but not investing in derivatives is gambling on uncertainty. Incorporating derivative strategies in our business can effectively reduce or transfer risk in our investment portfolio. Derivatives can also be used to increase profit through aggressive trading strategies. However, if derivatives are used in an environment where proper internal controls are weak or non-existent, disaster can strike �and it can strike quickly.

There have been many companies that have incurred crippling losses over the years using derivatives. In examining many of these debacles, many of the symptoms were the same:

Lack of training and/or understanding
Inadequate segregation of duties
Lack of management oversight
High use of leverage
Lack of internal controls
Poor risk management systems
Misunderstanding the inherent risk
Non-compliance with regulation �both internal and external

We will go behind the headlines of several notable derivative disasters to discuss what “actually�went wrong. We will look at the new accounting regulations that were recently adopted and we will cover the five general risk categories and discuss controls necessary to mitigate these risks.
