'' The Higher National Diploma in Performing Arts is designed to train you to become an actor and a performer. There is a strong element of practical work in the course and the college maintains strong links with local and national theatres, creating opportunities for you to experience the reality of performance
This production-based course is for students who wish to develop skills in the performing arts. The course is highly practical, but it also demands academic ability.
Entry Requirements: You will need to have an A Level or National Diploma in a relevant subject. We also welcome applications from mature candidates with recent, relevant qualifications or experience. Application is through UCAS (Institution Code: W65. Course Code: 034W. Short Form of Course HND/PA). When your application has been received, we will contact you to arrange a time for an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course. There will be a small audition as part of your interview. Auditions take place as group workshops followed by an opportunity to show your skill and creativity as a solo performer in one or more of the performing arts. About the course The course is taught by enthusiastic staff with industry experience. It is divided into core and optional units. These are wide ranging and cover all aspects of performing arts from research, performance and production to professional practice and management. Throughout the course you will develop skills in acting, dancing and singing. The course is structured around 3 areas of study: performance work in our studio theatre, on tour and in small theatre venues; knowledge, independent and group research in the history of contemporary theatre, how theatre companies work, copyright and health and safety; and skills, including acting technique, movement for actors, voice, singing and dance, and basic stage design. Core units include process and production, contemporary studies, and professional practice. You may choose from optional units including costume and set design and choreography. The department has dedicated performance and dance studios and rehearsal rooms.
Additional Opportunities You will be involved in community project work with local theatre companies, setting up and running productions in-house, in the community and on tour. Recent projects have included performances with the Rambert Dance Company and the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, and writing projects with the Donmar Warehouse which resulted ni a professional performance of the students�work. There are regular trips to see performances in London and at local arts centres.
How will I be assessed? The course is continually assessed through vocationally based assignments, finishing with a major project and an assessed show. Successful students will be awarded the BTEC Higher National Diploma in Performing Arts.
Where next? The college boasts numerous success stories including actors Anne-Marie Duff, Rufus Sewell and Martin Hancock, and musicians Celena Cherry of the Honeyz and Mark and Scott Morris of the Bluetones. Other students have recently secured parts in film and TV productions, while others work in dance companies and the theatre -- on stage and behind the scenes. If you wish to continue your studies you may progress on to the final year of a degree programme in performing arts.
