Training Course:First Diploma in Dance for International StudentsSchool/Trainer:West Thames College London, United Kingdom
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' The First Diploma in Dance is an introductory course for people interested in dance. If you have no prior knowledge of the subject, you will get an introduction to the practical and theoretical elements of dance. If you do have some previous knowledge or experience you will get the opportunity to develop and build on that experience
Who Is This Course For? Students mainly for young people including international students who are interested in dance.
Entry Requirements: You should have 2 or more GCSEs at grade D or above including English, Foundation GNVQ or NVQ Level 1. If you dont have any experience in dance you are welcome to join the course if you can demonstrate a commitment to learn and to work as a member of a team. You will need to fill in an application form and attend an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course, and you will have a small audition as part of your interview. If you have any questions about whether this course is right for you, please ask Admissions for advice
About the course You will normally work in a group of about 16 students, as well as individually. Much of the work is practical, so emphasis is placed on your ability to work as a member of a team. The course is usually timetabled over three days, and is assessed through the following units: production project (double unit), the performing arts business, understanding dance, and performing dance, and then one of the following: body workshop, musical theatre, acting, or mask making. You may study GCSE English and Maths on days when you are not timetabled for dance. At some points in the year when productions are scheduled, you will need to be in college for extra sessions to rehearse.
Additional Opportunities As part of the course we will encourage and organise group visits to a range of performances from professional dance companies. Where possible we will arrange workshops with professional dance practitioners.
How will I be assessed? Assessment is through assignment based work. The emphasis is on practical performance, although there is a certain amount of written work required. The work is graded into pass, merit and distinction. In order to achieve the diploma you are required to pass all areas of the course.
Where next? When you complete the course you may go on to further study, such as the National Diploma in Performing Arts, National Diploma in Dance, or A Level Drama. Because this is an introductory course, the First Diploma will not normally lead directly into professional performance work.
