Training Course:A Level BiologySchool/Trainer:West Thames College London, United Kingdom
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' A Level Biology is an advanced science course which aims to develop your understanding of biological facts, concepts and principles through experimental and investigatory work and independent research. In recent years there has been increasing emphasis on applied knowledge where the relevance of what is learned becomes paramount. This includes personal, ethical, social, environmental, economic and technological implications. Biology combines well with all the other science subjects, especially chemistry, but it can combine well with other A Levels such as psychology.
Who Is This Course For? This course is suitable for school leavers as well as those returning to study after a break.
Entry Requirements: The minimum entry requirement is 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C in appropriate subjects, though exceptions may be made for mature students, and you must also have a minimum grade C at GCSE for Biology or Human Biology. You will need to fill in an application form and attend an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course. Students who have passed AS Levels elsewhere are welcome to continue their course at West Thames, though we would need to establish that your AS pass is compatible with the syllabus we offer at A2. If you have any questions about whether this programme is right for you, please ask Admissions for advice
About the course The college has excellent modern facilities to teach this life science, and plenty of experiments are included to support the theory work. AS Units (EDEXCEL 8040) include: Unit 1 - Molecules and cells; Unit 2 - Exchange, transport and reproduction; Unit 3 - Energy and the environment and individual investigation. A2 Units (EDEXCEL 9040) include: Unit 4 - Respiration and co-ordination plus option (usually microbiology); Unit 5 - Genetics, evolution and biodiversity; Unit 6 - Individual study.
Additional Opportunities There is a field trip of about three days undertaken in the spring term of the AS course. The field trip enables you to complete Module 3 and the longer compulsory elements of the coursework. All full-time students are expected to attend and to meet a proportion of the travel costs.
How will I be assessed? Unit tests are between 1 and 1.5 hours long. The AS Individual Investigation is teacher marked, the A2 Individual Study is marked mainly by Edexcel. The Board moderates all coursework.
Where next? A Levels are the main nationally recognised qualification for entrance to a degree programme at university. Most of our A Level students apply to and are offered a place at university.
