About the course At West Thames College, A Level English students prepare for the AQA English Literature examination (Specification A). You will read four texts for your AS exam at the end of the first year and a further four texts for A2. In addition, A2 students are required to read a wide range of shorter pieces, including extracts from longer works, all of which address a common theme specified by the examining board. (You will be supplied with the extracts and shorter pieces.) The amount of reading required is relatively high, particularly for A2, so, whilst we tackle most of the work together, you will be required to undertake some independent study. Of course, teachers will offer guidance on all of the required reading. Some of the examinations are designated “open bookwhich means that you can take annotated copies of your texts into the examination room. You must buy the four set texts for AS and four for A2; they must be the editions specified by the examining board. The material will range from the 1600s to the present day, giving you a sense of the historical development of English literature. You will gain insight into how literature reflects the culture and values of the period in which it emerges.
Additional Opportunities There is the possibility of trips and visits relevant to your study.
How will I be assessed? There is no coursework requirement for this syllabus. Units are externally examined as follows: Drama and poetry: external exam, 2 hours, open book (40% of grade). Pre-1900 prose: external exam, 1 hour (30% of grade). Shakespeare: external exam, 1 hour, open book (30% of grade). Modern prose: external exam, 1 hour, open book (30% of grade).
