Entry Requirements: The minimum entry requirement is 4 GCSEs at grades A*-C in appropriate subjects, though exceptions may be made for mature students, and you must have passed English at GCSE at grade C or preferably higher. You will need to fill in an application form and attend an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course. Students who have passed AS Levels elsewhere are welcome to continue their course at West Thames, though we would need to establish that your AS pass is compatible with the syllabus we offer at A2. If you have any questions about whether this programme is right for you, please ask Admissions for advice
About the course You will study a wide range of popular Hollywood and British cinema, and learn how to analyse films to expose their inner or hidden meanings. This involves learning the “languageof film how the camera is used, the subtle importance of sound and lighting, editing, narrative and genre. Another area of study is the world dominance of Hollywood. You will learn about production, distribution and exhibition, producers, stars and audiences. We also look in detail at a particular aspect of British cinema, and will study one particular film very closely. The coursework consists of two written analyses and a portfolio of creative work. This includes thinking up an idea for a film, and developing it with the aid of a storyboard or script. In the second year the emphasis of the course shifts to world cinema. For those with a real appreciation of film, this is an exciting voyage of discovery. There are also opportunities to study a wide range of other topics such as censorship, film performance, and surrealist and fantasy cinema. The coursework for A2 includes a personal research project into cinema authorship, and then there is a choice of practical work screenwriting, filmmaking or film journalism.
Additional Opportunities There is the possibility of trips and visits relevant to your study.
