Course Description:

'' Those who want to go on to higher education and an eventual career in art, design or fashion, but who lack the necessary qualifications or have been out of education for some time. The course involves attendance at times designed to fit in with your work and home commitments, and you will be expected to work independently on assignments.

Entry Requirements:
You do not need any formal qualifications to enrol on an Access course; your life experience and skills will be taken into consideration instead. We particularly welcome applications from under-represented groups. You will need to fill in an application form and attend an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course, and we will ask you to complete an initial assessment in literacy and numeracy. About the course
Our main aim is to equip you with the abilities you need to progress towards a successful career in your chosen field. You will be trained by experienced professionals who will help you to develop your creative, technical and communication skills. By the time you graduate you will have a varied, well presented portfolio of work and the confidence in your own ability to enable you to progress to higher education or work. A variety of teaching methods will be used to prepare you for higher education. You will usually be in a group of about 16 students and will participate in group work as well as individual study. You will be taught by tutors who are sympathetic to the needs of people returning to study after a break. All students study the following core subjects: English, maths (numbers and how to use them), study skills/tutorial (how to be an efficient learner), IT (using computers), and contextual studies (the history of art and design). After discussing your goals and interests with your tutor, you will select options from the following: drawing and painting, printmaking, graphic design and illustration, sculpture/ceramics, surface pattern and design with textiles, desktop publishing and Photoshop.

Additional Opportunities
The course includes museum and industrial visits. Recent visits have been to the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Courtauld Galleries, and a trip around commercial galleries in central London.

How will I be assessed?
You will have a personal tutor who will guide and support you throughout the course and assess your development regularly to ensure that you are making consistent progress. We encourage active participation in this assessment procedure.

Where next?
You can go on to higher education, such as one of the HNDs at West Thames College or a degree course at university, leading to a career in art and design.
