Course Description:
'' This BA (Hons) Graphic Design (Visual Communication) is a one year top-up course for students with an appropriate HND who wish to obtain an honours degree. It has been designed to provide the mixture of theoretical and practical skills required for designers in this rapidly changing environment. Institution code name: WTC Institution Code: W65 Course Code: W210 (Route A) E210 (Route B) Short Form of Course: BA/GD (Route A) BA/GDb (Route B) Who Is This Course For? This course is a progression from an HND in Graphic Design and/or Advertising but students with alternative qualifications may be considered. The course aims to encourage you to develop new skills and professional training, focusing on the role of the designer within the design, building and manufacturing industries. It also enables you to examine the historical and contemporary cultural context of individual disciplines, whilst meeting the creative and intellectual challenges within the subject of graphic design.
Entry Requirements: You should usually have an HND in Graphic Design or a compatible art and design subject area with a merit profile, equivalent to 240 CATS credits. If you do not meet this standard you may need to complete some bridging studies before joining this course. You will need to show a portfolio of your work demonstrating your level of expertise and suitability for the course. You must have a good level of competence in English language (international students should have a minimum IELTS score of 6). You will also need to have the capacity for in-depth research, critical reflection and independent study, an appropriate level of intellectual skill and theoretical knowledge of historical and contemporary cultural issues, and a high degree of self-motivation and a willingness to contribute to learning and evaluation activities
About the course You will use purpose-built facilities and be trained by active professionals who will help you to develop your creative and communication skills. You will be encouraged to focus on the creative development of concepts and throughout the year you will work towards a portfolio of work that reflects your understanding of the creative process and demonstrates your ability to work within the confines of a design brief. You will learn how to challenge current perspectives of communication and the means by which a message is delivered. Teaching and learning is through a combination of lectures, seminars, student presentations, one-to-one studio teaching, studio critiques, individual and group tutorials, gallery visits and self directed study. There are 6 modules which you will need to complete to achieve your final award and for each of these you will have a detailed module study guide. In Semester 1 you will study concept development (learning how to be self-reflective to ensure continuous development and lifelong learning which is essential in your development as a designer and communicator), experimental communication (examining the role of the visual communicator to hone your skills in receiving information and imparting it to others) and create a design portfolio (stage one), giving you the opportunity to generate ideas and innovative concepts to create a body of work that reflects your style. A minimum of 3 briefs are to be submitted per semester. In Semester 2 you will study ideas and perspectives (examining visual culture through beliefs and values in today’s society) and create a design portfolio (stage two). This module is a continuation of stage one and enables you to continue developing your style and direction through live briefs. You will demonstrate your ability to integrate theory, practice and professional development through a minimum of 3 briefs during this semester. You will also complete a major project. This project is devised by you, with guidance from tutorials and peer group discussion, and is a culmination of your work over the course and your opportunity to demonstrate what you have learnt and how you have developed.
Additional Opportunities You will have opportunities to develop your understanding of graphic design and advertising through live projects, competitions and work placements. The college is close to central London and we encourage students to visit studios, galleries and appropriate events. You will have the chance to work on live briefs and enter competitions and exhibit your work in end of course shows, both in the college and at the D&AD annual conference, which is visited by thousands of people and industry professionals.
How will I be assessed? Assessment activities provide an opportunity for you to evidence your ideas, skills and achievement in a variety of ways including written, (essay, reviews, dissertation, self-reflective journal) oral (presentations, studio critiques) and practical (portfolio review, studio critique, exhibition) activity.
Where next? On completing the course you will have the knowledge, application, confidence, adaptability and motivation to enter a related field of employment, pursue study at a higher level, or pursue other personal ambitions.
