Course Description:
'' The Higher National Diploma in Fashion and Textiles aims to provide the creative, technical and analytical skills needed for creative design work. These skills will enable you to progress into employment or onto an honours degree. The priority is to learn how to think imaginatively and creatively. The ideas you produce can then be presented in a variety of methods and mediums such as fashion and textiles and 3D materials.
Who Is This Course For? The course is for students who want to study the processes and materials of design. It is also appropriate for mature students whose education has been interrupted or who would like a career change..
Entry Requirements: You will need to have an A Level or National Diploma in a relevant subject or the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. We welcome applications from mature candidates without formal qualifications who have recent, relevant experience in art and design. Application is through UCAS (Institution Code: W65. Course Code: 001W Route A / 001E Route B. Short Form of Course HND/AD FASH). When your application has been received, we will contact you to arrange a time for an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course. You will need to bring a portfolio of your work to the interview, which should contain a balance of rough and finished work, drawings, possibly photography and some written work.
About the course First year HND students follow similar core units, allowing a lively interchange of ideas and experience. The set tasks and assignments will reflect your interests and abilities and you will be encouraged to think laterally, take risks and develop your ideas with flair and technical ability. Year 1 studies include drawing techniques and approaches, visual communications, computer applications, fashion and textile materials understanding, historical and contextual referencing, design exploration in fashion, and jewellery, accessories and body adornment. You will also study the fundamentals of design communication, including modelling and photography as well as digital applications and critical theory. Year 2 includes further work on contextual studies and professional practice, then an increasing focus on units associated with your specialist area, such as research and development for fashion design, critical study, pattern drafting and construction, realising a fashion collection, millinery and headdresses. The focus is towards using fashion, textiles, and design in a variety of contexts, or as an expressive medium in their own right. We encourage you to acquire the skills to learn independently and develop a critical awareness. This is supported through tutorials, group critiques and individual projects.
Additional Opportunities You will have opportunities to participate in live projects and work placements. The college is close to central London and we organise visits to exhibitions, studios and galleries.
How will I be assessed? All assessment is through coursework assignments and you will receive feedback so that you can check your progress.
Where next? Students can progress to the final year of an honours degree, either at West Thames College (subject to final approval) or at university. The course offers a thorough grounding if you wish to enter different areas of design-related employment, including fashion and textile design, buying and marketing..
