Course Description:

'' The Higher National Diploma in Graphic Design and Advertising aims to provide the creative, technical and analytical skills required for the graphic design and advertising industries. These skills will enable you to progress into professional employment or on to the final year of an honours degree. You will learn to think imaginatively and creatively.for a business audience. The ideas you produce can then be presented as advertising, through graphics, or on screen as multimedia.

Who Is This Course For?
The course is for students who wish to prepare for a career in either graphic design, advertising or multimedia.

Entry Requirements:
You will need to have an A Level or National Diploma in a relevant subject or the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. We welcome applications from mature candidates without formal qualifications who have recent, relevant experience. Application is through UCAS (Institution Code: W65. Course Code: 001W Route A / 001E Route B. Short Form of Course HND/AD GD). When your application has been received, we will contact you to arrange a time for an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course. You will need to bring a portfolio of your work to the interview, which should contain both rough and finished work, drawings, possibly photography and some written work

About the course
Using excellent purpose-built graphics studios, you will be trained by active professionals who will help you to develop your creative and communication skills. You will also gain teamwork and self-management skills and the course aims to develop the technical skills and conceptual framework for graphic designers and advertisers to work successfully within a demanding, ever-changing and competitive industry. First year HND students follow similar core units, allowing a lively interchange of ideas and experience. The set tasks and assignments will develop these units in an exciting and flexible way to reflect your interests and abilities. In Year 1 you will study drawing techniques and approaches, computer applications, historical and contextual referencing, professional studies, image manipulation applications, typographic skills, advertising campaigns and ideas generation. In Year 2 there will be further work on contextual studies and professional practice, typographic ideas and editorial design, then an increasing focus on units associated with your specialist area, such as communicating with images, design craft skills, corporate identity, art direction, and copywriting for advertising.

Additional Opportunities
You will participate in live briefs, competitions and work placements. We encourage students to visit studios, galleries and appropriate events in central London. Our students have an excellent record of winning D&AD, Adshel and other design awards. There are end of course shows, both in the college and at the D&AD annual conference, which is visited by thousands of people and industry professionals.

How will I be assessed?
All assessment is through coursework assignments. Successful students will be awarded the BTEC Higher National Diploma in Art and Design (Graphic Design and Advertising).

Where next?
This course is highly regarded and many students go straight into employment in the design, advertising or computer graphics industries. You may also choose to further your studies by progressing on to the final year of an honours degree at West Thames College or at university.
