'' Food Preparation and Cooking NVQ Level 2 is a 1-year full-time course combining practical skills with catering theory. You will gain hands-on experience in a live catering environment preparing food for sale to staff and students in the college café. The course is based at the Skills Centre in Feltham.
Who Is This Course For? Students who are interested in a career in catering and have a high level of motivation.
Entry Requirements: You should have an interest in catering and preferably have 2 or more GCSEs at grade D or above, or an equivalent Level 1 qualification. You will need to fill in an application form and attend an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course. About the course You will be given opportunities to work with a variety of ingredients and equipment in order to learn the skills needed to produce food in a commercial environment. Alongside your food preparation and cooking qualification, you will also gain qualifications in food hygiene and health and safety, which are required for those working in the catering industry. You will study the Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering, which covers pathogenic micro-organisms, food poisoning, personal hygiene, temperature control, kitchen design, kitchen pests and food legislation. You will also study Foundation Health and Safety which will provide you with health and safety understanding, which will enable you to contribute to any health and safety management system. The course covers fire safety and prevention, ergonomics, first aid, COSSH, risk assessment, manual handling, personal protective equipment, electrical safety and legislation.
Additional Opportunities You will be given assistance in finding a 2-week work experience placement.
How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through ongoing assessment of practical and coursework. On successful completion of the course you will receive the following qualifications: NVQ Level 2 in Food Preparation and Cooking (Hospitality Awarding Body); Level 2 Award in Food Safety in Catering (Royal Society of Health); Foundation Health and Safety (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health).
Where next? You may wish to go on to further study such as the NVQ Level 3 or into employment.
