Course Description:
'' This course is for bilingual adults who want to improve their English and gain basic knowledge and skills in childcare and care. It combines language learning with practical activities in order to build your confidence and prepare you for further training and employment.
Entry Requirements: You do not need to have any previous qualifications in childcare, but you should be able to give reasons for wanting to work with children. You also need to have Entry 2/3 English. You will be interviewed before you enrol on the course, and you will have a written assessment to establish your level of language and maths skills. If you have any questions about whether this course is right for you, please ask Admissions for advice
About the course You will study child development, health and safety, provision for children under 8, the importance of play in learning, IT, English (speaking, listening, reading and writing), and numeracy/maths. You will have a group tutorial every week. Your tutor will support you throughout the course and ensure that your learning needs are met.
Additional Opportunities You will attend work placement one-half day per week over the year. This is a valuable opportunity to put the skills and knowledge you are learning on the course into practice. You will also go on visits to childcare centres and other places of interest during the course.
How will I be assessed? Throughout the year you will take part in group discussion, spoken presentations, basic written assignments, and practical exercises on the computer in order to help you prepare for examinations in the CACHE Foundation Award in Caring for Children and Skills for Life qualifications. You may also take numeracy and IT qualifications.
Where next? You will be encouraged to develop your own learning plans for the future and you will have the opportunity to get advice from careers advisers and other agencies. The aim of this course is to guide and prepare you for entry to mainstream childcare courses, such as the Certificate in Childcare and Education or NVQ 2. Your tutor will discuss options with you towards the end of the course.
