'' Mature students who wish to develop their professional massage skills in the treatment of sports related injuries.
Entry Requirements:
You must already hold the ITEC Holistic Massage Diploma or equivalent (formerly the Anatomy, Physiology and Massage Diploma, including the professional conduct and business awareness unit). An interest in sports, health and fitness is essential. Students must be in good health. If you have any questions about whether this course is right for you, please ask Admissions for advice
About the course
The course encompasses specific massage techniques, the use of ice and heat as well as remedial exercise and a range of stretches. Theoretical subjects will provide the knowledge needed to carry out your practical work. The course will give you the chance to work individually or as part of a team. Subjects studied include anatomy and physiology with special emphasis on muscles, especially origin, insertion and action; massage: specific techniques for sports (pre event, post even, remedial) as well as stretches (MET, PNF); the changes that occur during exercise to the muscular and other systems; common sporting injuries and how to treat them; contraindications; and principles of injury prevention and management. In addition to the course fee, exam fee, and salon charge (if applicable), you will need to purchase a textbook (approx £15). Please bring smart blue/black tracksuit bottoms, a white polo shirt, and white non-slip shoes.

How will I be assessed?
The examination for the course consists of a 1-hour written paper (multiple choice), a practical exam to demonstrate techniques used, plus questions from the examiner and 5 case studies. Case studies will consist of 5 clients to be treated 3 times each, and will be monitored and marked by your personal tutor.
Where next?
The ITEC Sports Massage Certificate will enable you to work with sports teams, sporting events, or sports clubs and gyms, in private practice, health clinics, health farms or holiday centres, or cruise liners. You may also wish to go on to other ITEC courses such as Aromatherapy or On-Site Massage, take short courses at West Thames College, or expand your career in beauty therapy or hairdressing.
