Course Description:
'' The subject areas include anatomy and physiology, providing an in-depth study of the human body; and salon administration, which will enable you to gain knowledge of legislation and core skills. The course consists of 9 units. Units 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13: Work with the face, hands, feet and hair removal hair by means of sugaring/waxing; electrical treatments such as high frequency, steam, vacuum suction, facial faradic, audiosonic, galvanic, micro-current; bleaching, nail care, basic make-up techniques, skin care and lash/brow treatments. Units 1 and 2: Anatomy and holistic massage, physiology. Units 18.1 and 18.2: Electrology, hair removal by means of short wave diathermy, blend and galvanic. Unit 22: Professional conduct and business awareness. You will submit compulsory case studies for each unit. All require research and study in your own time. You will carry out top to toe treatments as case studies in the practical commercial classes. Exams cannot be entered without prior submission. Core skills are built into the programme plus learning packs for study, including client handling, ethics, first aid, and hygiene. You will acquire expertise in practical and theoretical beauty skills through the practical class, assignments involving case study treatments at home and at college, assessments/feedback on the programme, theoretical/knowledge, and action plan for research and revision. In addition to the course fee, exam fee and salon charge (if applicable), you will need to purchase a beauty and makeup kit, beauty uniform, shoes and textbooks (approx £430). Financial assistance may be available. You may also purchase an optional waxing kit (£60), select from other optional kits available during your course, and attend an optional ear piercing course (approx £10).
Additional Opportunities You may have opportunities to visit a major health and beauty exhibition. Visiting lecturers provide additional input to the course.
How will I be assessed? Throughout the academic year continuous assessments take place in the form of practical work and theoretical knowledge �tests and homework are set at a given time. You must attend a minimum of 80% of the course and achieve a pass in all case studies for exam entry. Mock examinations are set prior to final examinations in June/July. Theory exams (9 exams, each 1 hour long) include holistic massage, electrology, nailcare, anatomy/physiology, makeup, professional conduct/business awareness, skin/eye care, waxing, and electrical facial treatments. Practical exams include beauty (4 hours), holistic massage (1 hour), electrology (30 minutes) and electrical facial (2 hours).
Where next? You may progress to other courses in hairdressing and beauty therapy or into employment. Many of our students are now employed in beauty salons while others are self-employed therapists providing a home treatment service or become salon owners.
