Course Description:

'' You will learn through theory and practical class (including practising all treatments on fellow students prior to working on clients), projects, role plays, case studies, work experience, competitions, and reception duties. The clients visiting our working salons require a wide range of treatments, and you will perform all portfolio evidence assessments on external clients. You will study the following subjects: facials, makeup, manicure and pedicure, essential knowledge: anatomy and physiology, depilatory waxing and sugaring, lash and brow tinting, eyebrow shaping, lash perming, salon administration and key skills. In each unit you will perform practical skills, submit course work tasks and sit tests. Two forms of certificate are awarded by the awarding body. The first recognises the achievement of all units of the full NVQ Level 2 certificate. The second is a partial qualification (record of achievement) recognising competencies and completion of individual units. To gain employment in all skills and to graduate to Level 3 the full award is necessary. In addition to the course fee, exam fee, and salon charge (if applicable), you will also need to purchase a beauty kit, uniform and shoes, record of achievement book and textbooks (£290 approx). You may also purchase an optional waxing kit (£60 approx). Financial assistance may be available. You may also attend optional courses such as ear piercing (£10 approx) and St Tropez (£22 approx).

Additional Opportunities
Visiting lecturers provide additional input to the course, and you may have opportunities to visit a major health and beauty exhibition.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is continuous, consisting of practical assessment, oral questions, written tests and homework. You will provide evidence to show you have reached a level of competence. All assessment will be in agreement with candidate and assessor, and all deadlines must be met. Written assessment papers will provide further evidence of your knowledge and understanding of the subject. You will collate all evidence in a portfolio consisting of: 1) Performance evidence: This would take place in the practical class or workplace. 2) Oral questioning: The questions must relate to the practical performance. 3) Written questions: As with the oral questioning, written questions will form part of the supplementary evidence. 4) Working diary: This will show the range of treatments you have performed.

Where next?
After successfully completing year 1 and having achieved certification for Level 2, you may apply for Level 3 to study for a second year to become a fully qualified beauty therapist. Level 3 progression is via interview and selection based on attendance, punctuality and performance.
