Course Description:
'' Your studies will cover all aspects of hairdressing at NVQ Level 2, anatomy and physiology of the face and neck, theory of hairdressing, health and safety, client care, basic business management, professional ethics, employment standards, makeup for performers, character and period makeup, special effects such as accidents and ageing techniques, introduction to facial hair attachments, and introduction to prosthetic pieces and to body painting. You will also study key skills, the Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene Exam, IT, numeracy and communications. You will be taught by highly qualified professional tutors who specialise in hairdressing and media makeup. You will work as part of a team and individually to complete your practical and theory assignments to deadlines which you have agreed with your tutors. In addition to the course fee, exam fee and salon charge (if applicable), you will need to purchase a kit which includes a uniform, hairdressing equipment, textbook, assessment book, two T-shirts, and makeup equipment (total approx £415). You will need to purchase an additional kit for the second year of your course (approx £100). Financial assistance may be available.
Additional Opportunities You will attend work placements in hair salons in your first year, and in theatres or with makeup artists in the second year. Communication between the college and industry enables employers and tutors to work together, enhancing your progression and quality of training. There will be a field trip to the Salon Trade Fair and optional trips will be arranged to hairdressing competitions and to Paris every other year (approx £170). You will have the opportunity to participate in an intercollege competition.
How will I be assessed? You will collate two portfolios on hair and makeup. There will be joint assignments covering more than one unit, and your portfolios will be continually assessed by your assessor and the internal verifier. The course is delivered in units; you can be assessed at any stage of the course when you feel competent. There are no final examinations. Your practical, oral and written work will all be assessed and feedback given at the end of each assessment.
Where next? You can go on to short courses in media makeup or the HND in Specialist Makeup, or into employment in hair salons, as a makeover demonstrator, or in TV or in the media as a trainee makeup artist.
