About the course During the course you will look at what affects children’s education, health and social well-being and how their needs are met. The one-year programme is modular. You will usually be in a class of about 20 and will work in groups on projects as well as individually. Three days each week are spent in college and two days in a practical placement. College hours are 9am to 4.30pm and placement hours are 8.30am to 4pm. Units include an introduction to working with children; the developing child; safe, healthy and nurturing environments for children; children and play; communication and professional skills; and the practitioner in the workplace. Optional units include working with children aged 0-5. There are also studies to support the vocational curriculum, including developing skills in communications.
Additional Opportunities The course is built around practical work placements in nursery classes, day nurseries and infant schools.
How will I be assessed? You will be assessed by means of an end of course short answer paper, the completion of a practice evidence record, and attendance in work placement, which must comply with CACHE requirements.
Where next? The programme enables candidates to prepare for work as a child carer in a range of establishments such as nursery and infant school (in some authorities), private day nurseries, a nanny in a private home, a childminder or playgroup leader. This programme can be used as a one-year certificate course or you may be able to progress to the Diploma in Childcare and Education (two-year course) or the NVQ Level 3 in Children’s Care, Learning and Development, dependent on final results of CCE.
