Course Description:
'' The National Certificate in Dental Nursing is held one evening per week. It leads to a qualification accredited by the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) and will soon be mandatory for all practising dental nurses. West Thames College has been a nationally approved centre for the NEBDN for many years and has excellent results -- our students achieved a 100% pass rate in last year’s examination. Our teachers are practising dental nurses with many years experience both in teaching and in dental practice.
Who Is This Course For? Dental nurses who are employed within a dental practice and wish to gain a recognised qualification.
Entry Requirements: You must be working (paid or unpaid) in a general dental practice, either private or NHS, or in the community health service and have at least 1 year’s current chairside experience. You also need to have good literacy skills to be able to study and produce written work. You will need to fill in an application form and attend an interview, which will give you the opportunity to ask detailed questions about the course. If you have any questions about whether this course is right for you, please ask Admissions for advice
About the course You will be taught in our modern science laboratories with access to practical equipment. The course is both practical and theoretical and includes revision sessions. It covers all aspects of dental nursing, including health and safety in the workplace, emergencies in the dental surgery, legal and ethical issues in the provision of dental care, anatomical structures and systems relative to dental treatment, oral disease and pathology, patient care and management, oral health needs and planning, restorative dentistry, oral surgery, orthodontic procedures, dental drugs, materials, instruments and equipment, and anaesthesia and sedation in relation to dental procedures. In addition to course fees, you will need to pay an examination fee. Assistance may be available to help with these costs.
Additional Opportunities There are no trips or visits on this course.
How will I be assessed? You will enter for the Dental Nurses Certificate of the National Examining Board for Dental Nurses (NEBDN) and will take examinations at their London centre. Assessment consists of Part A paper (15 multiple choice questions), Part B paper (four essay questions selected from five), spotters test, practical test, and oral. The examinations are held on the third Saturday in May and November in any year.
