Course Description:
'' Practical work forms approximately 60% of the course. Theoretical work gives insight to underpin your practical work and to understand the structures of the industry. The course is designed to provide you with a wide range of skills and to broaden both your job and higher education opportunities. The course is usually timetabled over 3 days. At points in the year when productions are scheduled, you will need to be in college for extra sessions to rehearse. Your practical work will take place in the Media Centre utilising digital equipment including 4 recording studios, Apple Mac-based sequencing suite, digital signal processing, recording, mixing and editing. Much of your work will be in the digital domain. The software we use is Logic Pro and Reason offering powerful audio editing and manipulation and effects applications including a host of audio instruments for sequencing. The course consists of 18 units core units which everyone takes plus 12 specialist units. The specialist units allow you to study particular areas in depth. Practical work includes acoustics, keyboard skills (playing, programming), 24-track analogue/digital mixing, sound design, signal routing, patchbays, recording studio production, digital sound techniques/sound fx, analogue/digital recording and editing, microphone types and applications, recording bands/musicians, audio theory, and a production project. You will have a personal tutor who will guide and support you throughout your course, and in the second year you will receive guidance for applications to university which can be made in January and March.
Additional Opportunities The course may include visits to exhibitions, band recording assignments, improvisation and a final year showcase of work.
How will I be assessed? The course is assignment based and is continually assessed. Your grades are recorded throughout the year and appear on your diploma. Your progress is constantly monitored and any problems are dealt with as they occur during sessions or in tutorials. Individual action plans are arranged during your tutorials to enable you to plan more effectively.
