Course Description:

'' You will normally work in a group of about 16 students, as well as individually. Much of the work is practical, so emphasis is placed on your ability to work as a member of a team. The course is usually timetabled over three days and is assessed through the following units: understanding the media, research for media production, media skills development, video production or animation, advertising production or multimedia production, and photography techniques or web authoring. In the second half of the course you will begin working towards a final major project. This will involve research and production of an appropriate media artefact, such as a TV magazine programme or a website. You may study GCSE English and Maths on days when you are not timetabled for media.

Additional Opportunities
There are occasional trips during the course to TV production bases, such as BBC TV Centre and Teddington Studios, and visits from media industry professionals.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment is through assignment based work. The emphasis is on practical work, although a certain amount of written work is required. The work is graded into pass, merit and distinction. In order to achieve the diploma you are required to pass all areas of the course.

Where next?
When you complete the course you may go on to further study, such as the National Diploma in Media (Moving Image) or the National Diploma in Art and Design with Animation. Because it is an introductory course, the First Diploma will not normally lead directly into professional media work.
