Training Course:PerlSchool/Trainer:Oregon Health & Science University Beaverton, Oregon, United States
Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced
Course Description:
'' This course is based on Randal Schwartzs popular OReilly Nutshell book, Learning Perl. The course presumes no prior knowledge of Perl, and exposes the course participants to what we call the "middle two-thirds" of Perl --those items that are needed to accomplish many common tasks, and to lay the groundwork for more advanced study on an as-needed basis. This is a hands-on course in which students apply the programming methods and principles developed in the lectures.
You can benefit from using Perl if: You need a powerful language that will let you quickly write applications (such as CGI scripts) for intranets or the World Wide Web;
You have large quantities of text or binary data (log files, audit trails, captured packets,telemetry, etc.) that must be analyzed and reduced into reports;
You need a general purpose Unix or Win32 prototyping or scripting language;
You need a tool that will help you transform, "munge" or otherwise rearrange the output of one program so that it can be fed to another. Understand what scalars, arrays, and hashes are, and how to use them. Be able to write subroutines and simple text matching patterns and substitutions Be able to read and write files and to get information on files and directories. Be able to use Perl instead of shell scripts (or programs in other languages) for nearly all tasks.

Conclusion Who Should Attend
This course is not for non-programmers. Participants are expected to understand fundamental programming concepts -- for example, "What is a subroutine? What is an array?" -- and be able to edit text files. A knowledge of UNIX shell scripting and/or C programming is also very helpful, but not necessary.
