'' This course is ideal for people with little or no experience of IT and deals with much of the theory behind modern computing. The course covers all the topics required for the ECDL Module1.

By the end of this course you will be able to:

Define the terms Hardware, Software and Information Technology
Differentiate between different types of computer and the main parts of a modern computer
Understand the role that key hardware components play in the running of a computer system, including the central processing unit, input/ output devices and memory storage devices
Differentiate between different devices used to store information on a computer and explain when each would be most suitable taking into account speed, cost and capacity.
Explain the factors in the running of a computer which effect the computers overall performance
Describe how computer memory is measured
Differentiate between software used to run computer applications like Applications and Operating System software
List the key stages involved in the development and design of software
Differentiate between a standalone and networked computer and list the relative benefits of each set-up
Understand the network terms LAN, WAN and The Internet
Discuss how computers, electronic mail and the Internet are used and have affected everyday life at home, at work and in education
Explain health and safety issues relating to the use of computers
Understand the security issues relating to the use of computers including the effective back-up of data and how to avoid computer viruses, and legal issues including the Data Protection Act and it’s implications for all computer users
