Training Course:

Emergency and Environmental Management (Master Degree)

School/Trainer:

Florida State University
Tallahassee, Florida, United States

Course Format: Classroom | E-learning | Virtual Class | Online | On-site | Blended | Self-paced

Course Description:

'' Environmental management encompasses the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies designed to enhance the quality of the natural environment. Graduates work in regulation and enforcement activities, growth management, and administrative staff operations in agencies that deal with environmental problems. Most employees in such agencies have technical backgrounds.

The specialization is especially suited to persons who have specialized knowledge or experience, in such areas as pollution monitoring or environmental impact assessment, and who wish to move up to managerial and policy related positions. The specialization is also available for students who lack either technical training or experience, but these students should seek careful advice to assure that they take the courses that will give them sufficient technical knowledge to be competitive for entry-level positions (the dual degree with planning might be advisable).

In rapidly growing Florida the health of tourism, our largest industry, depends directly upon the quality, accessibility, and beauty of our natural resources. We seek to prepare graduates who can contribute to the development and management of policies that will enhance the quality of both the natural and human environments, graduates who can encourage ecologically sustainable development.
The state of Florida is no stranger to disaster. With a population approaching 15 million, 80 percent of whom live in the state’s hurricane-vulnerable coastal areas, an aggressive emergency management system is a necessity. These factors have contributed to Florida consistently leading the nation in emergency management policy, practice, and technology.

The College of Social Sciences and the Askew School have developed strong ties to the emergency management community, through nationally and internationally known researchers and emergency management practitioners on their teaching and research faculty. The emergency management component of this specialization is designed to prepare managers with the skills and knowledge to navigate their organizations through crisis events or to take entry positions within the emergency management field. Students in the emergency management sub-field may simultaneously complete requirements for a five-course graduate certificate in emergency management.

Students should, under advisement from program faculty, pursue the set of courses related to either of the two sub-fields in this specialization.
