Course Description:

'' This course uses a combination of didactic teaching, interaction with guest panelists who are experts in the field of healthcare economics and business, and participative exercises in the classroom. Students will have the opportunity to discuss their own experiences with the healthcare “system�and its associated costs. Small groups work includes identifying alternative scenarios that would have a positive impact on healthcare cost trends in the future. Individual students develop an action plan for their own position that could “bend the trend.�

Knowledge of the “macroeconomics�of health care
Understand how student’s actions can impact the cost trends in health care.
Exposure to alternatives to the current health care delivery system and financing.
Interaction with several community leaders in health care, business and public policy.
What you will cover:

Current health care economics and economic trends in the US �contrast with several other industrialized nations, particularly the NHS in Britain
The large public policy issues being debated, and how several states are approaching health care cost management
The impact of current health care costs on business, and how several businesses are managing their health care costs
How large health care delivery systems and insurers are working to control their costs
How health care costs are impacting individuals and families, and what are issues for the future
Development of alternatives to the current health care delivery system and financing for the future
How each student can personally impact health care costs
