'' This class is designed to allow students to become more effective in talking about diversity. A major goal is to explain the cultural competence model through didactic and interactive instruction with practical applications. Students will learn about cultural competence and a rationale for its use; how diversity can be defined in terms of within- and between group differences. They will also develop an understanding of diverse health beliefs and practices, as well as where they or their client may lie on a values continuum.

Rationale for attending to culture in the context of providing patient and health related services
How culture shapes the way people define illness, health, and well-being; seek help, and perceive credible providers and relevant services
Prototypical cultural values and how cultures have influenced each other over the past few generations

Multicultural and cultural-specific barriers to patient-centered care
Individual and agency cultural competence self-assessment strategies and resources for enhancing awareness, skills, and knowledge
Community and culturally based resources and how they can be identified or developed, and ultimately accessed to enhance service delivery or expand systems of care for culturally diverse clients and communities
Students will receive an expansive reading list from which they can select to stimulate discussions, develop personal bibliographies, and generally helps individuals identify ways the concept can be manifested in their current work or academic settings
