'' This qualification will provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to assist veterinarians in the treatment and care of animals needing medical and/or surgical attention, and carry out reception duties. You will learn skills to assist with surgical preparations and procedures, respond to emergencies, assist with diagnostic procedures and assist with preparing medicines prescribed by the veterinarian. You will also learn how to care for and handle a range of animals and provide effective service to their owners. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.
Veterinary nurses have a cool head in a crisis, and love animals. If youd like to make a career of helping a veterinarian care for animals, this qualification will give you theoretical and hands-on skills in a surgical environment. You will learn how to assist with diagnostic procedures and preparation of medicines, how to assist with surgical procedures and how to care for and handle all sorts of animals, and how to deal with their owners.
Veterinary nurses assist in all aspects of duties carried out by veterinary surgeons. They may be employed for reception duties or as surgical or general assistants to a veterinary surgeon. They are not allowed to diagnose or treat animals except under veterinary supervision.
If you believe you would enjoy working with animals, then veterinary nursing may appeal to you. Veterinary Nursing can be a very challenging and interesting career.
The object of the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing is to provide theoretical and practical training in all aspects of veterinary nursing to enable the nurse to assist veterinary surgeons in the care of large and small animals.
Graduates of the Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing may be registered as qualified veterinary nurses with the Veterinary Surgeons Board of Western Australia.
Swan TAFE is the only TAFEWA College in the State that offers training in animal studies. As part of the completion of this qualification, you will be involved in work experience. You will have the opportunity to handle and work directly with native wildlife, aquatic animals, birds, reptiles and rodents on campus.
