Depending on the pathway you have chosen you will learn about safety in the workplace, using and maintaining tools, effective communication, calculations and team work. You will also learn skills ranging from cabinet making to glazing. As part of this qualification you will undertake a supervised work placement where you will be able to apply the skills and knowledge you have learned.
Love your lounges, cherish your chairs, like kitchens with Karma or beautiful bathrooms? If you want a career making furniture, this qualification will make you competitive in seeking an apprenticeship. Learn practical skills in cabinet making and machine woodworking as well as how to produce domestic and commercial furniture and fixtures. Learn to manufacture kitchens and bathroom cabinets, about safety in the workplace, how to use and maintain tools and much more.
The aim of this pre-apprenticeship is to provide advanced standing for the person wanting to enter a Cabinet Making or Furniture Making apprenticeship. Whilst the attainment of the qualification does not guarantee employment, successful completion will generally result in a placement.
Cabinet Making is generally accepted as the term given to enterprises engaged in flat panel construction of kitchen/bathroom furniture.
Furniture Making concentrates on the production of solid and free standing furniture.
Cabinetmakers work from plans or drawings to make home and office furniture, as well as make built-in cupboards and fixtures for new homes and shops. The materials they use include timbers, veneers, particle boards and plastic laminates to manufacture quality products. To produce these, cabinetmakers use a wide variety of hand and power tools in conjunction with fixed machines and equipment. They have some skills in common with other Wood Working trades, such as Wood Machiners and Carpenters and Joiners, but their work is more detailed and precise.
Successful completion of the pre-apprentice qualification offers excellent employment opportunities in furniture making and related trades.
Employers in the first instance look to recruit new talent from successful pre-apprentices, as they will have already demonstrated a willingness to work in the industry and have shown evidence of a high aptitude in this trade area.
